Before you get too excited about the rare Gac fruit it is important to know that it doesn't taste like much. Now that that is out of the way let's dive into what the Gac fruit is all about.
Cut the fruit in half to find the edible portions of the fruit. The big red, creamy chunks that surround the large seeds are edible, and so is the melon-like flesh that makes up the fruit. So why import a fruit that doesn't taste like anything? Purely for nutritional purposes.
"Gac Fruits are known for their high lycopene and beta-carotene content. This compound has antioxidant-like properties to protect the cells in the body against the damage caused by free radicals. Some studies indicate that Gac fruits contain seventy times more lycopene than tomatoes. Beta-carotene also adds to the fruit's colouring and is converted into vitamin A in the body to maintain healthy organ functioning. It is believed that Gac fruits contain ten times more beta-carotene than sweet potatoes or carrots. In natural medicines, Gac fruits are also valued for their omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins D, E, and K, and linoleic acid content." (specialtyproduce.com)
Simply put: Gac fruits might not taste like anything, but they are absurdly good for you.
