The Xuong Longan isn't just different than Ido longan because of their larger size and more aromatic flavour. No, no. They are different because they cannot grow with fresh water, but rather they require salt water to grow. This isn't totally unique to longan as the best coconuts are grown with a salt/fresh water mix. The salt water makes for a more flavourful and aromatic fruit. It's comforting to know that even in a world with no fresh water we would still be able to grow some fruit.

Longan Fruit is a member of the Soapberry family, along with its lychee and rambutan cousins. Longan is rich in vitamin C and has a very high sugar content; which you will notice on your first bite. It is believed that this super fruit helps treat insomnia, stress and anxiety. It has also been said to increase the libido. So when oysters aren't available, just dig into a few of these. 

Preparation Ideas: Grab a small knife and cut the skin off. Flick the seed out and enjoy the soft, yet crunchy, floral flesh. Longan's are also great in cocktails, smoothies, and milk tea.
